Person resting their eyes at a laptop after long screen use

If your eyes feel heavy after a day of WhatsApp, Zoom, and screens at work, you are not alone. Digital eye strain (sometimes called computer vision syndrome) is the discomfort that builds when we look at screens for long stretches with few breaks.

Why screens tire the eyes

When you focus on a phone or monitor, you often blink less. That dries the tear film. Glare from bright offices or outdoor light on a laptop, low contrast text, and sitting too close or too far all ask the focusing system to work harder. An outdated glasses prescription makes it worse.

Common signs

  • Tired, dry, or watery eyes
  • Blur that clears after a short rest
  • Headaches around the temples or forehead
  • Neck and shoulder tension from leaning into the screen

Practical relief

Keep the screen about an arm’s length away, with the top of the display at or slightly below eye level. Soften glare with better room lighting or a matte filter. Every 20 minutes, look at something roughly 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. If you wear glasses, tell your clinician how many hours you spend on screens so lenses can match real life.

When to book at Balija

If strain returns every workday, vision stays blurry, or headaches are new, book a comprehensive exam in Lekki or Enugu. We will check focusing, dryness, and whether a small prescription change or computer-focused lenses could help.
